Windows
A double-hung window is a versatile and popular type of window which features two operable sashes that slide vertically within the frame. Both the upper and lower sashes can move up and down, allowing for varied ventilation options. When both sashes are open, warm air can escape through the top while cooler air flows in through the bottom, enhancing air circulation and energy efficiency.
In contrast, a single hung window is a type of vertically sliding window where only the bottom sash can be opened, while the top sash remains fixed in place. The single hung window will typically have an insect screen which only covers the bottom half of the window.
The design of hung windows incorporates a system of balances, typically springs or weights, which hold the sashes in place at any desired height. This allows for smooth operation and ease of cleaning, as many modern versions of these windows also offer a tilt-in feature, enabling one or both sashes to tilt inward for easy access to the exterior glass surfaces.
